Sunspill
Fine art photography prints from a sabbatical through Morocco.
The dunes, the medinas, the corners most people walked past.
The places I went looking for the moments in between.
I took these photographs on a sabbatical through Morocco in 2018 — the Sahara, the medinas of Fez and Marrakech, the ancient villages of the south.
I wasn't documenting landmarks. I was paying attention to what everyone else was walking past.
The light on a dune face. A door too extraordinary to have no crowd around it. A corner where the shadows fell exactly right for about ten minutes before the sun moved on.
These images sat on a hard drive for years. They deserved more than that.
The Sahara doesn't do subtlety.
Captured in the rolling dunes outside Merzouga, Lucent is about the way desert light splits itself — the sharp, almost brutal highlight on one side of a dune, and the shadow on the other so deep it looks almost blue. There's nothing else in frame. Just sand, light, and the particular silence of a place that's been the same for ten thousand years.

You smell water before you see it.
In the middle of the Sahara, green appears without warning — a cluster of palms, a strip of scrub, something impossibly alive against all that dust and heat. Oasis was shot in one of these moments: the landscape suddenly soft, the light filtered, the world briefly kind. It's a photograph about relief. About the thing that keeps you going.

The Sahara at the end of the day looks like it's on fire.
Shot from the crest of a dune outside Merzouga as the light dropped, Wander catches that last hour when the desert stops being vast and starts feeling intimate — the shadows long, the colours pushed into something almost unreal. A camel train in the distance, barely a silhouette. The kind of moment that makes you understand why people have been crossing this place for thousands of years.

A camel line crossing the Sahara looks the same as it did a thousand years ago.
Traverse was shot in black and white, the caravan moving in single file across the crest of a dune — dark shapes against a pale sky, the rhythm of the line almost meditative. Stripping the colour out of the desert does something unexpected: it makes the scale feel bigger, the silence louder. This is one of the quieter images in the collection and one of the most enduring.

The Sahara is a place of colour you don't expect.
Roam was shot mid-morning as a figure moved through the dunes — the deep rust and indigo of their robes against the pale sand, the kind of contrast that stops you mid-stride. It's not a landscape photograph. It's a portrait of someone entirely at home in a place that would swallow most of us. The colours in this one are the whole story.

A camel up close is not what you imagine.
Enormous, ancient-looking, entirely unbothered. Companion is a close portrait — the animal's face filling most of the frame, the Sahara soft and pale behind it. There's something almost comic and completely dignified about camels at this range, and this one had both in equal measure. It's the image in the collection that makes people smile first and then keep looking.

Nothing dramatic is happening in this photograph. That's entirely the point.
A camel, side-on, standing in the Sahara. The dunes roll out behind it. The sky is wide. I took this and thought — that animal has absolutely no interest in being anywhere else or doing anything differently. Completely at home in something enormous.
I'm working on that. Being where I am. Not running to the next thing.
This one belongs in a room that needs to slow down a little.

The mud villages of southern Morocco look like the earth decided to stand up.
Same colour as the ground, same texture, built from exactly what surrounds them — the whole structure rising out of the landscape as if it grew there. I was struck by how something so simple could be so beautiful. No clever materials or modern intervention. Just compressed earth, straw, and centuries of knowing what works.
There's something in that I keep coming back to. Restraint as its own kind of creativity.

Aït Benhaddou has been standing since the 11th century and it looks exactly like it.
I got there early — before the tour groups, before the heat — and the whole ksar was just sitting in soft morning light, glowing from its own warmth. Layers of mud brick towers and ramparts rising from the edge of the river. Ancient in a way that makes your own timeline feel very small and very manageable at the same time.
I think that's why I keep coming back to travel photography. It puts things in perspective without even trying.

I climbed to this balcony at the end of the day and the whole town turned gold all at once.
Moulay Idriss spreads across two hills and from up here you can see all of it — the white and terracotta buildings tumbling down the slopes, the minarets, the rooftops, the sky going amber and deep rose behind everything. I stayed longer than I planned, which is the clearest sign a place has you.

I almost walked straight past the alley that led me to finding this building.
One of those unmarked turns in the Fez medina that doesn't look like anything from the outside — and then you're in it and there's this. Intricate carved plasterwork, tilework, architecture so detailed it takes a few seconds to even know where to look. The kind of thing that exists completely unbothered at the end of a random alleyway, with no crowd around it and no sign pointing you there.
That's the thing about Fez. It hides its best work. You only find it if you go rogue.

Marrakech has been painted this colour for centuries and you can feel why.
That burnt orange — ochre, terracotta, a little bit pink — sits differently in different light. At midday it's almost terracotta. At dusk it glows. I found this door in a quiet corner of the medina away from the souks, the paint peeling back in layers, the afternoon light making the whole surface look lit from within. I didn't move for a while, taking it all in.
The seemingly insignificant details. That's always where it is.

I stopped in the middle of the street for this door.
Just stopped. Completely blocked foot traffic and didn't care. The detail work is genuinely unreasonable — carved wood, geometric inlay, pattern on top of pattern on top of pattern. The kind of craftsmanship that makes you aware of how little patience you actually have. Someone made this by hand. Probably many someones, over a very long time.
I took the shot and then just stood there a bit longer. Some things you don't want to walk away from too quickly.

Nothing extraordinary was happening here.
Just a quiet corner in Marrakech where the light and shadow were doing something I couldn't walk past. The way it fell across the wall — soft in some places, sharp in others. I've learned to trust that instinct. The one that makes you stop for something you can't fully explain yet.
Not every photograph needs a story. Sometimes it's just light being itself in a corner nobody else stopped for.

The craftsmanship in Fez is genuinely unreasonable and I mean that as a compliment.
I stood in front of this doorframe — carved geometric detail pushed right to the edge of too much — and felt deeply aware of what I hadn't noticed before. Beauty at a scale and density that makes you slow down whether you want to or not. I took this shot and immediately understood something about my own work: restraint is a choice, not a default.

This is the Royal Palace of Fez and the moment you see it you completely understand why people stop.
The gates are enormous — ornate brass doors surrounded by hand-cut mosaic tile, carved cedar, and gold detail that catches the light from across the square. It's one of those places that doesn't need context or explanation. It just lands. Even if you had no idea what you were looking at, you'd stop.
I did. Everyone does.

He was completely unbothered.
Sitting in the middle of his shop — rugs stacked to the ceiling, homewares spilling out in every direction, colour and texture absolutely everywhere — while tourists moved through like weather. Not performing for anyone. Not trying to sell. Just existing in his space with the particular ease of someone who has been exactly here, exactly like this, for a very long time.
I loved him immediately. I took the shot before he noticed and I'm glad I did.

I almost missed him.
A lone figure moving through an alley in Moulay Idriss — unhurried, completely at home in the narrow street, the blue and white walls framing him without trying. I took the shot quickly and quietly. The kind of photograph that only exists because you were paying attention at the right moment.
There's something about a person alone in a beautiful place that gets me every time. Not lonely. Just present. Exactly where they're supposed to be.

Casablanca is not what the film leads you to expect.
It's a working city — port cranes, apartment blocks, traffic — and it's more interesting for it. Nomad was shot in one of the quieter corners of the local Mosque, where the bustling visiting tourists and the busy day to day happenings coincide. This man, stationary amongst the chaos, taking a quiet moment, was the equivalent of time-stopping in human form.

There are no straight lines in the Sahara.
Every ridge leads to another ridge, every dune face shifts with the wind overnight. Retrograde was shot mid-morning, when the light was still low enough to carve the landscape into ridges and hollows. The kind of image that makes you want to keep walking, even though you're not entirely sure where you're going.
